History

Early life for Christopher "Kit" Hershel wasn't a pleasant one. He and his twin sister were born into a small family at the heart of a coal mining town on the outskirts of New York. The sky was constantly filled with a heavy black smog and the high pitched sound of the factory alarm whistle was always echoing through the town. Accidents were a daily occurrence; people would come up from the mines with missing limbs and some didn't come up at all. Kit took it upon himself to be the leader at home while his parents were working in the mines and did much of the house work with his sister. The family was barely scraping by and missed suppers weren't uncommon. It wasn't the terrifying accidents that finally took Kit's mother though; it was the rasping, bloody cough that came from the months and years of hard labor in the mines. Only a month later did his father develop the same illness, and he too passed a week after the discovery.

The utter shock and pain of being left alone made something change in Kit. He was no longer the optimistic young man he had once been, and with the passing years he became increasingly distant from other people. He swore he would do what it took to take care of his twin sister, the only remaining family he had left in the world. Kit fought tooth and claw and worked his way up in society over the next several years, though in no means was it in a fair way. He stole for food, he broke into shops and snatched up wealthy women's coin purses when they weren't looking. He even encouraged his sister to play along, and together they would make up grand stories and scam any way they could. 

With the passing of the years Kit's schemes became increasingly wild and macabre in nature. Nothing was ever enough. Kit began to associate with several gangs in the New York area and did business with them under the table for many years, elevating his status from petty thief to seasoned criminal. Firearms and drugs were shipped back and fourth and meetings arranged, but the operation became increasingly risky as it grew. With his newfound riches and power, Kit opened up his own speakeasy dubbed the Cobalt Cobra where he would be free to do business in secret. It was a safe place for the twins and became their home in many regards. Others soon sprung up all across the city

But their shared golden age didn't last.

A series of rumored murders began to spring up around the establishment, all leading back to the twins. Kit did not take kindly to traitors to their business, and those people very quickly dissapeared. The talk became so much that their regular flow of customers began to diminish. There were safer places to grab a drink. Kit's affiliations to New York's gangs became strained. Some demanded answers for the allegations and Kit refused. The straw that broke it all was when one of their more popular Cobalt Cobra locations was infiltrated and shut down by police.  

After that Kit decided that he and his sister should lay low. He proposed that they escape to the countryside for a few weeks and demanded that Kat go with him whether she like it or not. 

The drive to the countryside was not without its faults, however. Tensions between the twins in the cramped packard coupe skyrocketed during a storm and the pair broke out into a heated argument. Kit believed that it was Kat's recklessness that led their business to go under and he did well to tell her. At the peak of their shouting Kit lost control of their car and swerved off the winding road, the front of the car landing straight into a deep ditch. 

And that's when everything went black.
