Author's Note: Just a little thing I wrote for my girlfriend tonight. She and I exchange letters by mail (even though we talk every day) and we tend to write in a 'ye olde' fashion as she likes to say, and we developed this narrative of a knight and a witch. If anybody saw her VD gift for me (link below) you can probably ascertain who the knight is. I like the dynamic, because the knight is representative of civilization yet is drawn to the witch and the nature she tends to whilst the witch ventures into civilization as she is drawn to him in return. I enjoy this little story thoroughly.

Now, the poem. I like it but it's weird. It's a narrative poem but my narrative poems are usually written in free-verse with more flowering language. Throwing the concept of meter out the window, if we just focus on the rhyming scheme: stanzas 1-3 ABAB, stanzas 4-6 CDCD, stanza 7 EAEA. I cheated a little on the rhyming in the first stanzas, or at least it feels like cheating. One or two words don't obey their classification I fear but again, it's a poem, so there's some wiggle room I think. And although I consider it kind of weird to not have a rule of three seeing as there are three groups but group three has but one stanza, I thought it was better not to draw out the ending. Now that I'm looking at it again, I worry there may not be as much substance as I think there is, but then I remind myself that less is more in poetry and I'm confident that I conveyed the story well enough. 

But like I said, I'm happy with it. Anybody who has been reading my work for a while knows that I have a fairly tumultuous relationship with poetry. I feel much more surefooted writing prose than poetry. However, it's good to step out of your comfort zone and try to work with a style of writing you're not surefooted in. You might slip, fall, skin your knee a little bit, but you teach yourself something through that stumble and when you try again next time, you just might not stumble.
