perhaps we are all conservative
yet we take things that are offbeat and outcast at times
and propose a better life that is more inclusive

that is the liberal way

Recently, I finished watching the Anime "Violet Evergarden" which originally aired in the first half of 2018. It was a beautiful experience, both visually, audible and story-wise - and if you can watch it, I'd highly suggest the series to you. Since I really like the design of Violet herself when a friend first her showed her to me, I quickly settled on doing a FanArt for the series.

To get the side view of the head done properly, I followed this tutorial by Naschi: Learn Manga: How to draw the female head side

Overall I'm happy with the final illustration even though some parts gave me troubles and made me wish for traditional art having [Ctrg+Z] at times. In specific, I didn't thin out the colors on her jacket properly, so they turned out a little oversaturated compared to the other parts of the illustration. I then adjusted the other parts a little with adding a bit more watercolor carefully, and ultimately lowered the saturation of the affected parts in Photoshop a little. Other than that the bushes did not turn out like I wanted in the beginning, and I was unable to completely fix the ones the lower left corner of the illustration. While adding new layers of paint, the underlying color were reactivated at times due to the water and started to bleed into one another. I think I did a better job on the upper right section of the bushes though, so at the very least I can take some experience out of my missteps here. It has still been a lot of fun to work on a traditional illustration again for the first time in quite a while, and I hope I can eventually do traditional art a little more frequently again.

Materials used: Canson A4 300g/m² watercolor paper | Schmincke Akademie & Horadam Pearl/Gold watercolors | Dr. Ph. Martin's Hydrus Fine Art Watercolor
