This is my submission for the first week of The Written Revolution's "Game of Genres" competition. The competition requires you to write a story in two random genres. For the first week, you had to pick between Space Opera and Urban Fantasy. I decided to be predictable and do Urban Fantasy. It's been my bread and butter as of late. This story clocks in at about 1458 words which just barely fits within the 1500 word limit.

Fun fact, the characters in this story are from the rough sketch of a story I made back in 2015. I wrote a bit of something inspired by a Vampire Weekend song but it never really came to anything. When I saw the details of the competition, they naturally came to mind despite the time that's past. This story, in particular, had to go through several names and POV changes for me to be satisfied with it. Though this story maybe could fit within the wider Hollow Grove universe (still feels weird calling it that) the fact that they predate it by a good year makes me hesitate to say so.

Questions:

  1. What do you think about the characters (Cale and James) in this story? Particularly in regards to the relationship between them and the world around them?
  2. Thoughts on the POV? I went from third at first but decided halfway to go with first instead? Do certain parts come off as janky because of this?
  3. Thoughts on the title? It took me forever to come up with it and I'm still debating it.
