have my overly ambitious CHALLENGE: flipped fairytales. I chose the legend of Kahalaopuna. no optional challenge, because Hawaiian doesn't use rhyme. this might not count as a fairytale, but it wasn't overtly mythological, so there.

this is a very well known story. there's an opera about it, several songs, apparently a live action retelling on Youtube I didn't have time to watch yet. lots of things!! it's also the story I know the best, because I had to do a presentation about it. the presentation was in Hawaiian on the local radio station and it was just a lot of "a make 'ia, a ho'ola 'ia, a make 'ia, a ho'ola 'ia....." because the story has her murdered FIVE times.

I changed very little about the story, just put it from pueo's point of view and changed the emphasis on her beauty. all the tragic beautiful women (and men) in these legends. being pretty gets you killed. and occasionally brought back to life.

Notes:
Pueo is the Hawaiian word for owl.
Kauatuahine is the name for the Manoa rain (legend is she became the rain after her child's death). I used the alternate spelling of Kauatuahine's name because that's the way I remember it.
Kahaukani is the name for Manoa wind.
