Luis CdeBaca, a lawyer and diplomat, will take lessons from the worker-led campaign for corporate social responsibility and apply them to the effort to prevent the global and US anti-slavery movements from drifting into complacency and xenophobia. Previously, he served in the Obama administration as Ambassador-at-Large and Senior Advisor to the Secretary of State on  trafficking in persons and as Director of the Department of Justice’s Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART). At the Justice Department from 1993 through 2006, he lead the investigation and prosecution of cases involving human trafficking, police brutality, and hate crimes, as well as money laundering, organized crime, and alien smuggling. As a fellow, he will work to ensure the implementation of policy measures that uphold the interests and human rights of people subjected to all forms of human trafficking.

CdeBaca graduated from Iowa State University (BA, 1990) and attended the University of Michigan Law School (JD, 1993) where he was editor of the Michigan Law Review.  He is the recipient of the Secretary of State's Distinguished Honor Award, the Attorney General's Distinguished Service Award, the Attorney General's John Marshall Award, and the Director's Award from the Executive Office of United States Attorneys.
