My favorite book - ever - is The Dream of Perpetual Motion by Dexter Palmer. 
Here's what people might tell you the book is about: William Shakespeare's the Tempest in a steampunk setting.
Here's what the book is really about: Imagine being imprisoned on a blimp that can't land and the only thing to keep you company is your, now driven-insane lover's voice over the intercom? What would you do? The protagonist, Harold Winslow, decides to write his life story, and it's amazing. Just read it. This is based on a particular scene in that story.

Because I guess that's still a thing now.
At one point Harold recalls the demise of his sister, Astrid:
Long story short she decides to literally die for her art (read the book, just read it) and the similarities of this and the final act became very clear to me. As well as her last words are confused as "hot buttered spleen" by her pretentious art friend.

Just. Read. The book. 
Just to drive this point home. I've read several times since 2010 and it's still my favorite. As of writing this, it is 2017.
