Born of Chaos, Nyx was the goddess of the night in Greek mythology…one of the ancient primeval gods, the elemental components of the universe that emerged at creation. Found in the shadows of the world, only ever seen in glimpses, Nyx was like a dark veil of mist drawn forth from the underworld. A figure of such exceptional power and beauty, she was even feared by Zeus, the Father of Gods and men. Breeding with Darkness (Erebos), Nyx produced Light (Aither) and Day (Hemera). She was the mother of Sleep (Hypnos) and Death (Thanatos) and also gave birth to a brood of dark spirits, including the three Fates, Dreams, Sunset, Doom and Destiny. When Day entered she scattered the mists of night, and once Nyx returned, she left. So this was described by the ancient Greek poet Hesiod (8th-7th century BC) in Theogony; "Nyx and Hemera draw near and greet one another as they pass the great threshold of bronze: and while the one is about to go down into the house, the other comes out at the door."
