Written for MagicalJoey's Anthology Contest
MagicalJoey's Anthology ContestWhy hello there you lovely person. Yes, you! No, not the madly waving person behind you...just you. You have arrived at a very nice place. While we have no unicorns, candy or coffee, we do have a contest! That's right, you've arrived at: (Idea stolen, kinda, from here: Aero's Anthology Contest! (Deadline April 30!) ) While the idea isn't an original one, I decided that I wanted to host a poetry contest that promotes the writing of poetry. And what better way to do so than by holding an Anthology Contest - I am an aspiring poet who aims to publish an anthology one day, and I am sure that there are many more like me - where you have to write poetry that is specific, packs an impact and is anthology 'worthy'. Thankfully I am not like Mary Poppins in the gif below - for then you wouldn't know what to do would y I've chosen to write a poem for every town I've worked in/lived over the past year. I travel a lot for my job and though I currently rent a home in Oakland, CA I am rarely there. So far in 2016 I have spent 8 days at home and the rest on the road, working. I know a lot about hotel rooms, and introspective thinking. These poems mostly convey my thoughts and feelings during my time in those places, sometimes I refer to things I actually saw, or allude to encounters with people I actually met, but I mostly keep it in the vein of internal dialogue using metaphor. I also tried to inject a (very) small refrain into each piece [the subtle "It's like.."] to cement them together as a unit. I rather enjoyed writing these and will undoubtedly continue to add to this anthology as my travels continue. Much thanks for reading. UPDATE 9/29/2016: added Dallas, TX
